A Note of Support and Next Step
I hope this message finds you well. I want to thank each of you who have already signed a Unifor membership card and to encourage those who are considering it.
Recently, we've heard from many of you about ongoing concerns regarding workplace safety and the lack of enforcement of safety protocols. These issues not only affect your well-being but also impact the quality of service you provide to patrons.
Unifor is committed to supporting you in creating a safer and more respectful work environment. Through our National Health, Safety, and Environment Department, we ensure that workers understand their rights and the legal obligations employers have to provide safe working conditions. We believe that every worker has the right to feel secure and respected at work.
In partnership with our Education Department, we provide training to workplace representatives. This empowers you to hold your employer accountable using the mechanisms provided by legislation. In Ontario, for instance, workers have the right to refuse unsafe work. However, we understand that exercising this right can be challenging without the backing of a strong union.
By uniting under Unifor, you gain the collective strength to advocate for:
-
Improved Health and Safety Measures: Ensuring that safety protocols are not only established but strictly enforced.
-
Proper Training and Resources: Providing staff with the necessary tools and knowledge to handle challenging situations effectively.
- Legally Negotiated Collective Agreements: Establishing clear terms and conditions that protect your rights and well-being at work.
Health and safety are paramount, but they are just part of the broader improvements we can achieve together. A legally negotiated collective agreement between you and your employer sets the foundation for better wages, benefits, and working conditions across the board.
Your experiences highlight the importance of coming together to advocate for positive change. If you haven't yet signed a Unifor membership card, I encourage you to do so. Your unity is your strength, and together, we can work towards a safer, more respectful workplace where everyone's rights are protected.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need more information. I'm here to support you every step of the way.
