Constitutional Investigation
Good Evening GardaWorld YYC Workers,
As workers actively engaged in an organizing campaign to join our union, we want to make sure you have the facts about the current investigation into an alleged breach of the Constitution by former Unifor National President Jerry Dias.
Unifor is a modern union with a robust constitution and an active democratic process. Unifor’s leadership has a deep understanding and respect for the Constitution.
We have a National Executive Board (NEB) as well as a Constitutional Matters department that is responsible for upholding the constitution, which they have done in this case. All members, including the National President, are held to the same standard.
The strength of the union and our commitment to all members remains as strong as it was when we started this campaign.
Unlike other unions that have attempted to hide and misinform, we acted exactly as our constitution demanded, with integrity and respect for the process.
A Union of Members
Unifor advocates for and defends the economic rights of working people, including: safer work places, secure employment, wages and benefits that provide a decent standard of living, and dignity and mutual respect in the work place.
The strength of Unifor comes from the diversity of our membership.
In the last week, VIA Rail members launched a campaign to improve passenger rail service, health care members shared their stories of working through the pandemic, thousands of members continued their negotiations with employers, like that nearly 5,000 members at Bell Canada’s clerical groups.
More Information
Several weeks ago, Unifor’s Secretary-Treasurer received a Constitutional complaint and immediately began a confidential, independent investigation.
Under the constitution, any independent investigation into any member must be carried out confidentially until it is completed.
The complaint was heard and action is being taken, but no one is rushing to judgement.
In this process, former National President Dias is being awarded the same rights as any other member in a complaint that our Constitution has been breached.
Despite this difficult news, know that our commitment to you and your co-workers is steadfast.
We will be the representatives you deserve and we will bargain improvements in your collective agreement – including benefits – while not going backwards.
