GardaWorld Update 18 - Welcome and Transition
Good evening GardaWorld workers,
For some of you this is the first communication you will be receiving from Unifor. This is because we were only entitled to complete contact information from GardaWorld after the certification. We are now in receipt of this information and able to communicate with the entire membership.
We want to assure you that we are moving as quickly as possible to get things in order, address outstanding issues during CLAC’s representation and move forward. We recognize that many have questions and we are hopeful many of those will be answered below.
We recognize that while the majority voted for change in Unifor, there are workers that supported CLAC who would have preferred another outcome. To our supporters and to those we need to earn your support, we ask that you give us the time to show you exactly what kind of union Unifor is.
Local Union & Service Representative
You have been assigned to Unifor Local 2002 and will work with National Representative Karen Caig to achieve your first collective agreement. Many of you will know that Unifor Local 2002 for their presence at YYC with our current membership.
Going forward you will be connecting with your local union will facilitate your grievances and take carriage of the previous CLAC grievances. Karen and Tammy will be in touch soon regarding a meeting and planned in-person visits.

Benefits Transition
Your CLAC health and dental benefits will cease at midnight on Tuesday May 31. Any claims dated prior to May 31 will be covered by the CLAC plan even if claimed afterwards. After midnight, you will begin you health and dental benefits with Unifor. The health and dental benefits provided at this point in time will remain with all the same coverage levels will be as they were with the previous CLAC coverage. The improvements made to the benefits plan will be determined by the membership at large and negotiated at the bargaining table.
Since the certification, we have been working with GardaWorld to transition all of the member documentation to get you enrolled and setup. This being said, we will need to register your dependents as transfer of any of this information is from either provider or GardaWorld or CLAC contravenes the privacy act. The form to enroll dependents will be made available as soon as with have the enrollment finalized. You will also be issued a new number for the new plan, as will your dependents. We are working as quickly as we can on this file.
For LTD/STD benefits, incidents occurring before midnight on May 31 are part of CLAC coverage, incidents after midnight will be part of the Unifor coverage. For life insurance, this will work the same way. We are again working with GardaWorld to transfer the appropriate information to the providers.
We know this is a critical issue and it is a top priority in the transition.
Grievance Transition
CLAC has transferred all outstanding grievances and your local union now has them. They are beginning to work through these and connect with the affected membership. For new grievances, you can connect with you local union or an existing shop steward, until your new ones are elected.
Shift Bid Grievance
As some of you are aware, the new shift bid process has changed from the understanding of the previously used system of allowing part-time workers to use their hire date seniority for full-time bids. We attempted to resolve this with GardaWorld and with assistance of members, however, no deal could be reached that would result in a fair shake for the members affected.
A grievance was filed on behalf of the affected members and will keep the membership up-to-date on this.
We will also make this a bargaining priority to develop fair collective agreement language for all members.

For education, this is a fundamental priority for Unifor. We will work with your newly elected representatives to get them the training they need to serve the membership.
