If you've been following the organizing campaign at Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall, you've probably spent some time thinking about whether having a union is the right choice.

That's exactly what organizing is about. It's about workers taking the time to ask themselves an important question:

Has anything changed on its own?

Think about the issues people have been talking about. Scheduling. Communication. Fairness. Consistency. Having a voice when decisions are made that affect your work.

For many people, those conversations have been happening for a long time. While some improvements may come and go, the reality is that policies can change whenever management decides. What one manager introduces today, another can change tomorrow.

A union is different.

A collective agreement is negotiated by the employees and the employer. It sets out your wages, benefits, working conditions, scheduling rules, and other workplace rights in writing. Those protections can't simply be changed because management decides it's time for something different.

Just as importantly, the priorities come from you.

If workers choose to join Unifor, you'll elect your own bargaining committee made up of your coworkers. Before negotiations begin, everyone has the opportunity to complete bargaining surveys and identify the issues that matter most. Your first collective agreement isn't written by Unifor. It's built by the people who work at Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall.

Many people have already signed a union membership card.

Signing a card does not mean your employer is told you signed. Union cards are confidential and are submitted to the Ontario Labour Relations Board as part of the certification process.

If enough employees sign cards, workers will have the opportunity to participate in a secret-ballot vote to decide whether they want union representation.

That decision belongs to you and your coworkers—not management, not Unifor, and not anyone else.

Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall are two of Canada's most respected performing arts venues. Every performance depends on the people who welcome guests, serve patrons, support productions and keep these venues operating every day.

The people who make these venues successful deserve a meaningful voice in their workplace.
