Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall Workers: Let’s Talk About Collective Power!
Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall Workers: Let’s Talk About Collective Power!
As we continue building momentum in this campaign, it’s important to reflect on why you are coming together. Many of you have shared what makes this job special—whether it’s the pride of working in iconic venues or the camaraderie among coworkers. You’ve also shared concerns about areas where things could be better, like fair scheduling, safety procedures, and transparency on gratuities.
By coming together as a union, you have the opportunity to protect what works and improve what doesn’t. That’s the power of having a collective voice.
What Does Worker Power Mean?
When workers organize, they gain the power to negotiate as equals with management. Instead of decisions being handed down without input, a collective agreement ensures you have a say. That means:
-
Protecting the best parts of your work: If there are policies or benefits you like, a union ensures they’re written into the contract and can’t just disappear.
-
Improving what needs to change: Whether it’s training, safety, or transparency, your collective voice is the leverage to push for real improvements.
-
A binding agreement: A collective agreement is legally enforceable, giving you the power to hold management accountable.
Young Workers and Precarious Employment
Many of you are navigating a workforce that looks very different from what it did even a decade ago. For younger workers and those in precarious employment, unionizing is an incredible opportunity to level the playing field. In a time when:
-
The cost of living is skyrocketing, from rent and groceries to transportation, many are struggling just to get by.
-
Living wages aren’t guaranteed, and raises don’t always keep pace with inflation, let alone reward the value of your work.
-
Job security feels uncertain, especially for those juggling unpredictable schedules or part-time work.
A union gives you the power to fight for wages and benefits that reflect the realities of today, ensuring fair treatment and greater stability in your work and life.
Workers Everywhere Are Demanding Better
You’re not alone in this fight—across the country and the world, workers like you are standing up and demanding fairness. From warehouses to restaurants, and from entertainment venues to tech companies, workers are saying enough is enough. It’s inspiring to see people coming together and realizing their power to make change.
Unions like Unifor are about helping workers stand together, advocate for better treatment, and ensure fairness in workplaces where respect and equity may not always be priorities.
Addressing the Myths About Unions
Some of you may have heard negative things about unions in the news. Let’s set the record straight:
-
Unions aren’t “outsiders.” Unifor isn’t here to take over—it’s here to empower YOU. A union is simply workers like you coming together to advocate for what’s best for everyone.
-
Union dues are an investment in yourselves. They ensure you have access to legal support, organizing expertise, and resources for better pay, benefits, and protections. And remember, you don’t pay dues until your first contract is negotiated and ratified.
-
Unions adapt to today’s workplace. While unions have a long history, they’re not stuck in the past. Unifor is focused on modern issues like health and safety, work-life balance, and even how technology like AI impacts jobs.
