HEADING TOWARDS A FIRST COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT AT NEXTSTAR ENERGY

Unifor is proud to be Canada’s autoworkers union, representing over 40,000 workers in:

  • Vehicle assembly
  • Powertrain operations
  • Component part manufacturing
  • Logistical support and service
  • Office, clerical and engineering.

Unifor’s commitment is to ensure all workers across the automotive supply chain have a voice at work and the power to improve their working conditions through collective bargaining.

Canada’s automotive sector is transitioning towards electrification. This presents challenges for workers facing job disruption and who want to maintain good wages, benefits and fair working conditions. But the transition also presents new opportunities for investment and job growth. The NextStar Energy battery facility in Windsor, Ontario is an example of this new opportunity. NextStar Energy is a joint venture between Stellantis (the owners of Chrysler) and LG Energy Solutions (LGES) and is Canada’s first large scale electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility. To ensure NextStar employees benefit from the safe, good paying and family supporting jobs like other Canadian autoworkers, they must have access to collective bargaining.

Unifor and its Local 444 have represented Stellantis (Chrysler) workers in Windsor for nearly 70 years. We believe those bargaining rights automatically extend to workers at NextStar Energy, and communicated this to the employer in 2023 contract talks with Stellantis. Unifor is looking to begin negotiations toward a first battery cell factory collective agreement in Canadian history at NextStar Energy and is encouraging all NextStar Energy employees to sign a union card (link below) to confirm their support for union membership in Local 444.
