Workplace Change, Unifor Protections & CN Tower Lockout Update

You may have seen the recent announcement: Grant Troop, Vice President of Operations, is retiring.

While some of you may not have worked directly with Grant, his role has had a significant impact on many aspects of daily operations. Some people are feeling optimistic or even relieved about the change, while others are understandably wondering what’s next.

The truth is: we don’t yet know.

What we do know is that organizational changes are coming. Management has stated that adjustments will be made at the departmental level, but not for staff at this time. We've all seen how quickly those words can change.

That’s why having a Unifor collective agreement matters. With a union contract, workers aren’t left to guess what the next change will mean for them—you have a say, and a shield against sudden, unfair changes.

A Unifor agreement ensures:

  • Predictable schedules and protections against arbitrary changes

  • Wages and benefits locked in through negotiation

  • A voice in health and safety, training, and workload changes

  • Due process if management shifts direction

Without an agreement, new leadership can make sweeping changes with little input. With Unifor, you help decide what change looks like.


Elsewhere in Toronto: CN Tower workers locked out

If you’ve heard about Unifor in the news, it’s likely due to the lockout at the CN Tower. Over 250 Unifor members (Local 4271)—including hosts, servers, cooks, and bartenders—were locked out by Canada Lands Company on June 30, just ahead of the Canada Day tourist rush.

These workers are fighting for:

  • Pension improvements

  • Wages in line with inflation

  • Improved health benefits

  • Health & Safety issues

Instead of negotiating fairly, the employer locked the doors.
